If you are interested in researching a little about skin care and skin health it wont be long before you start to read about the role of keratin in maintaining your skins health. But what is keratin?

You can find keratin in our hair and nails and our skin, amongst others. It is a protein that is very strong.

Keratin is formed by cells called keratinocytes and is found mainly in the epidermis of our skin, and they will slowly make their way to the surface of the skin where they form a protective layer of dead skin cells which are slowly lost over time.

Keratin does some good things for our skin like providing some waterproofing qualities, but there are 2 functions in particular that are essential to skin health. Elasticity and strength and elasticity.

Both of these are essential to skin health, but as we age our store of skin keratin reduces so the strength and elasticity of our skin reduces.

So it must be good to use skin care products that contain keratin to replace our skin’s stores of keratin? No.

You see the keratin that is used in mainstream skin care products is extracted from the horns and hooves of animals and is extracted using acid and heat. This results in the keratin being denaturalized by a process called hydrolization. Denaturalized simply means that its no longer of use to your skin because its form has been changed.

So what is functional keratin? This is keratin that is extracted from the wool of sheep without using heat or acid, and so it is not denaturalized. It is functional in the sense that it is still in a form that is available for the skin to use.

One very small company has only very recently perfected this process and has patented it, and puts the functional keratin into a product called Cynergy TK that is used only in the very best skin care products available.

Studies on the results that use of Cynergy TK can produce have been impressive with visible results within a short time, a reduction in wrinkles and fine lines and an improvement in the complexion.

Cynergy TK is expensive, and so the big brand name skin care products don’t use it. But it is possible to get skin care products that contain Cynergy TK, and they aren’t more expensive than other skin care products. Why? Because the big brands spend their budget on advertising, whereas the small niche company spends it’s budget on product quality.

The price of big brand skincare products has to reflect the cost of the advertising.

So now you know more about keratin and what it does in the skin, and about what funtional keratin is.
